Risking it all for an eggplant

Would you risk your life for an eggplant?  This was the question I was asking myself last night as I searched in the dark during an intense thunderstorm for an eggplant to harvest for dinner.  When a lightning bolt lit up the sky, instead of dropping my metal hand pruners to avoid electrocution, I used the bright light to locate the Thai Hybrid Tiger eggplant that I remembered seeing on the plant the day before.   I captured my elusive prey, and ran into the house soaking wet but victorious.

Vegetable gardening definitely triggers temporary insanity.  A gardening friend in Indiana e-mailed me about her frantic midnight lima bean harvest last month when an unexpected frost threatened to kill her plants.  And a customer at The Cutting Garden recently ordered flowers to be sent to her 86 year old aunt who broke an arm and a leg when she fell off the top of a wall while she was pruning her lemon tree.

In my defense, the eggplant was needed for David's latest kitchen creation:  tostadas with black beans, cotija cheese, and eggplant.  On the side, an amazing salsa made with our fresh tomatillos and jalapenos.  Thankfully, I harvested the tomatillos and jalapenos before the storm hit.  I savored the dinner flush with the excitement of surviving danger in the name of gourmet cooking.  David just thinks I'm insane.   Please confess your craziest behavior in the name of a great meal - I know I'm not alone.

ps  Recipes for the tostada and tomatillo jalapeno salsa coming soon...

  1. Another gorgeous photo and recipe. I love tiger eggplant and you've brought out it's best side (although it doesn't have a bad one ;)

  2. haha if I had as lovely of a garden as yours, I too would probably brave the elements to save the harvest of my blood, sweat, and tears!

But are you going to post that dish? Sounds delish!

  6. That is too funny. I'm only that dedicated in the Spring when I've gone all winter without fresh from the garden produce. By the time Fall comes around if it is raining I stay inside.

I tend to forget all the crazy things I do, but slug hunting comes to mind. Nothing makes you crazier in the NorthEast than slugs. I will get up before dawn to spear the little slime monsters. Then I leave the dead bodies out for the birds to eat. Did you know that slime trails show up really well with the little LED flashlights?

  7. Thai eggplants are so good in stews among other dishes, worth venturing out in the storm.

  8. I have never risked my life for a vegetable, but I have risked for herbs. I keep hinting to my hubby that I need a retractable roof over my herb garden:-) We just planted tomatillos for the first time this year, I all ready bookmarked you corn chowder and would love to have your recipe for the salsa, oh, please post it!

  9. That's great! (dangerous but great) I've frequently (foolishly?) braved the rain to run out and grab herbs from my garden. The tostada sounds delicious.

  10. Well worth it! Sometimes a great meal involves a little risk of bodily harm.

  11. Funny! And although I live in Dallas, I know that those thunderstorms down where you are can be crazy too! I've gone out to clip parsley in the rain, but never a thunderstorm. I have brought the grill into the garage during a storm though, just so I wouldn't have to change my meal plans!
